History of the Kalashnikov Rifle
Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov began designing an assault rifle while hospitalized after being wounded in the battle of Bryansk. He entered his design into a competition, launched by the Red Army, to find a weapon that could use 7.62 x 39mm cartridges and not jam inder the adverse conditions of the Soviet frontline. It was not immediately taken up by the Red Army, but in 1949, the Soviet Union adopted one of the models dating to 1947.
They named Kalashnikov's assault rifle the "Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947" later to be known as the AK47.The AK47 became a standard issue rifle in the Soviet Army. It's popularity grew as the gun would operate under the most extreme situations, such as being buried in sand,or submersion in water.Kalashnikov's invention has become one of the greatest innovations in arms and one of the most recognized rifles in the world.
