There have never been “bad boys” like the short-wheelbase 1300
horsepower Fuel Altereds that used to compete in NHRA, AHRA, and 1320
meets during the mid-late 60’s. One of the true standouts of this class
was Rich Guasco’s “Pure Hell” driven by Dale “The Snail” Emery.
Starting with a blown small-block Chevy in 1964, Guasco soon figured out
that he needed Chrysler Hemi power if he was going to run with the big
dogs. Engine swap complete, “Pure Hell” was at the top of a handful of
Fuel Altered that would often post times that were in the league with
the AA/Fuel Dragsters. Most impressive were the drivers that had to be crazy to pilot
these out-of-control rockets
